About Tabari.nl

Tabari.nl is the first complete Dutch translation of Jami al-bayan an tawil ay al-Quran — the tafsir (Quran commentary) of Imam Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Jarir at-Tabari (died 310 AH / 923 CE). All 6,236 verses of the Quran are translated verse by verse and faithfully, free to read and search.

What is Tafsir al-Tabari?

Jami al-bayan is the oldest and most authoritative classical Quran commentary. Around every verse, at-Tabari gathers prophetic narrations, sayings of the companions and their successors, linguistic analysis and his own considered judgement. For centuries it has been the standard work on which later tafsir built.

The translation

The full text is translated into Dutch word for word, under a strict anti-softening protocol: nothing is omitted, toned down or reinterpreted. Chains of transmission (isnad) are kept in full; Quran verses are kept in Arabic.

The source

The Arabic source text comes from the Dar al-Tarbiya wa-l-Turath edition (the tahqiq of Mahmud Shakir), verified against app.turath.io. See the full account on the transparency page.

Coverage

All 114 surahs and 6,236 verses of the Quran are covered — 100%, each verse linked to its tafsir passage.

Free, offline and open

Tabari.nl is completely free and needs no account. You can search per ayah or by meaning, open a page-exact mushaf view, and use the tafseer offline (installable as a web app or Android app). The source code and migrations are open and reviewable.
